The Lord’s Supper
We discussed the Lord’s Supper this past Sunday, and I wanted to leave a couple of thoughts about what we talked about in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34.
We were challenged by Scripture to do 3 things at the Lord’s Supper Table:
Past: Examine our own hearts and lives before we partake in the Lord’s Supper. We are not looking for perfection, but we are trying to make sure we are coming together with sincere hearts focused on remembering Jesus’ sacrifice.
Present: In verses 17-22 we are challenged to enter into this time of remembrance in unity with one another. We all have our own ideas, cultures, desires, and preferences, but it is not around those things that our unity revolves. Our unity comes from the Cross of Jesus Christ, and in the present, as we partake in Communion together, that unity should be real and it should be felt.
Future: We are told to “proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes” in verse 26, and that is exactly what we should do. We should leave the table with a sense of awe and wonder so intense that we are forced to share our experience and our love for Jesus with others. Proclaiming the Lord’s death to as many people as we can should be the mission of our lives!
The Lord’s Supper should never be commonplace, boring, or “normal.” Every time we have the opportunity to partake in this together, it should be a time of awe-inspiring worship that pushes us emotionally, physically, and spiritually. If you have not had that experience lately, the next time your church does it (which I pray is more than quarterly or yearly!) open your heart and mind to the fact that you are taking part in something instituted by Jesus on the night before He was crucified and you have the chance to remember and celebrate Him!
